Tips For Introducing Cats

When you decide to add a new cat to your home, it's normally more exiting for you and your family than it is for the cat you already own. Although most cats are solitary by nature, most will also come to accept or eventually tolerate any additions. Cats can be very territorial, which is why you should always be careful when you introduce a new cat to your current cat.

If you are introducing kittens to one another, the entire introduction process can be short, lasting as little as 10 - 15 days. Introducing cats to each other all depends on their temperament and their personality. When you introduce a new cat to your current cat, you should always make sure that you give your current cat plenty of love and attention. This way, your cat will feel secure and know that he isn't in competition with your new cat for affection.

When you bring your new cat home, you should let him stay in a safe room until you have finished introducing the cats. Your safe room can be any small room in your home, such as a bathroom or spare bedroom. The key here is to use a room that your current cat doesn't go in. In the room, you should leave your new cat a scratching post, bed, water dish, litter box, and food dish.

At first, your current cat may howl and hiss when he stands at the door, trying to tell the other cat that he doesn't belong. When this happens you should ignore it, as punishing your cat for his behavior will only lead to more problems. After a while, the first cat will start to act calm when he is near the new cat's door. As he starts to act calm, you should pet him and give him praise.

When your first cat starts to go by your new cat's door and doesn't howl or hiss; you can start introducing them to each other. The best way to do this is to get them used to each others scent. You can start letting them eat out of the same food dish, although you'll want to feed them at different intervals at first. This way, the scent of each cat will be present at the food dish, and each cat will get the scent when he eats his food.

Once both cats have got used to the scent, you can begin to feed them closer together. To do this, you should keep your new cat in the safe room with the door closed, and your first cat on the other side of the door with his food dish. This time, feed both cats at the same time. After doing this a few times, they should start eating without any hissing or growling. At this point, they are ready to be introduced to one another.

When you introduce them to each other in the same room, a bit of growling and hissing is to be expected. Although they may be used to each others scent; your first cat will still feel a bit awkward with your new cat being in his territory. You should play with them both at first, so they can smell one another and greet in their own way. If they start to fight you should break them up, and give them some time apart.

It may take some time to get them fully used to one another, although once they do - they will become playmates for life. Cats love to be social, although it may be a bit rough at first, especially for your first cat. Cats can be very territorial, especially if you have a kitten around. If you get both of them used to each other early on - it will be a lot easier to add future cats to your home.

Adopting your First Kitten

As a first time cat owner, you probably have a lot of questions about your new kitten. This article will address the most common ones.

First there is the question of food. Please ignore all those cutsie cat food commercials, and don't bother with the cat food aisle in the grocery store. Instead, go to a natural food store, or a pet supply store that specializes in natural products.

A premium quality food will have no by-products, no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. It will list a meat-based protein source first, such as chicken or lamb. The better ones will have more than one protein ingredient.

Grains should be kept to a minimum, and should be whole grains, not fractions such as corn gluten meal or rice bran. Some of the newer cat foods are now grain-free.

Cats and kittens require a high protein, high fat diet.

Kittens should be fed two to four times a day, once or twice a day is enough for the adult cat. Pick up any leftover food after thirty minutes.

Don't worry if it doesn't look like the kitten is eating much. Even adult cats usually eat a small amount at a time, and kittens are very small animals. Cats also won't eat if upset or nervous, as your new kitten will probably be.

Be sure to have water available at all times, though most cats do not drink much water, especially if they are eating canned food.

For food dishes, any small, shallow container will work. They seem to have the easiest time getting every last bit out of dishes with rounded bottoms. You can offer treats if you like, but don't overdo it,or the cat will wait for them and not eat it's regular diet. Too many treats will make your cat fat, which is unhealthy. Be sure to use a premium brand of treat as well, and never feed the soft ones - they contain harmful chemicals.

Though not a big part of a cat's diet, many of them like some fruits and vegetables. Experiment to see what your kitten likes and use tiny bits of these for treats. Some foods they often like include cantaloupe, broccoli, green beans, asparagus and squash.

Treats can be used to train a cat, and can be useful in getting them used to brushing and nail trimming.

The next item you will need for a cat is a litter box or two. The type of litter you choose depends more on your preference than the cat's, although as a rule I would avoid any scented litters.

Keep the boxes clean by removing solid waste several times a day. Clumping litters allow you to remove the urine as well, but these types may not be good for your cat's health. The properties that allow the litter to clump together also cause it to clump in the cats intestine if they ingest too much of it. (They will often have a grain or two stuck to a paw, which they will swallow during grooming).

For non-clumping litters, stir the litter to disperse the urine, this allows it to dry quickly and lessens odor. Depending on how dirty it is, you should empty the box completely and replace the litter at least once a week.

The mother cat usually trains her offspring to use the litter box. Unless you have adopted a feral kitten that has never seen one, the most you may need to do is to put the kitten in the box and scratch the litter a little bit. Let him get out by himself, so he can orient himself to its location. A scratching post for your kitten will save your drapes and furniture. Sisal posts are best, but many cats enjoy the cardboard ones,sprinkled with a little catnip.

Get your kitten used to having his paws handled early on, in preparation for your trimming his claws. Buy a special scissors for the purpose, and make it a pleasant occasion for the kitten. Do this by giving extra yummy treats or by giving him lots of love and affection in between each snip of the scissors.

You will want to have your new kitten examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Friends and coworkers can act as referrals to veterinarians if you don't have one in mind. Choose a vet as you would any doctor. You want someone you can be comfortable with, someone who will answer your questions and take time to talk about your concerns.

Kittens love to play - especially late at night. They don't really need any special toys, but you may enjoy shopping for them. When giving them something to play with, give it the same thought you would in giving a toy to a baby or small child - as in can they swallow this?

While string and yarn are thought of as cat toys, they are actually dangerous. String can do severe damage to s cat's intestines if they swallow it, and some cats will do that. I have made simple catnip toys by stuffing infant socks with dried catnip and sewing them closed. Paper bags also make great toys.

Cat beds are nice, but few cats restrict themselves to one sleeping place. You may find them on your bed, the back of the couch or your favorite chair. Where the sun is, so is the cat. Cats like small spaces, so the kitten will probably be most comfortable in a kitten-sized bed, which means you will have to replace it as she grows. A basket lined with a soft towel works fine, too.

The world is a scary place for young kitten, especially if it has just left its mother. To minimize stress, put your kitty in a quiet room by himself when you first bring him home. Put his food, water and other supplies in there with him and leave him alone for a while. Allow him time to get used to a new environment before adjusting to people. In no time he will discover that your lap is a very comfortable place to be and your touch is a source of pleasure.

Cats are amazingly self-reliant animals. They will learn the ropes just fine. In a day or two, open the door to the cat's room and let him begin to explore.

Kittens should come in pairs. One is fun, but two is better. The two will play together, sleep together and provide endless hours of entertainment and photo opportunities. They will also chase each other across your bed at 2:00 am.

Easy Steps in Supporting Prevention of Animal Cruelty

Animal cruelty is a very real crime. Every year, there are several animals that are maltreated. Whether they are household pets like cats and dogs, or wild animals like bears and elephants, these animals are not safe from animal cruelty. However, only a few concerned citizens are aware of this crime. If you want to show your support for preventing animal cruelty, here are some easy steps that you can follow.

Set an Example

Start the change within yourself. If you own an animal, set an example for others by always providing your pet with the proper love and care that it deserves. Always provide fresh water, food and shelter. Be responsible and have your pets neutered or spayed. When your pet is sick or is in need of medical treatment, send him to a veterinarian. It is important that you do not neglect or abuse your pets. Shower it with a dose of tender, loving care.

Encourage Others To Join You

Have others back you up. Otherwise, no one will take you seriously. There are several ways to gain supporters. You can either host rallies or write a petition. Support Organizations Against Animal Cruelty

There are very many organizations against animal cruelty. These organizations are committed to stopping animal abuse and neglect. Also, they rescue and treat animals that are formerly victims of animal cruelty. You can show your support by being part of these organizations and giving donations that will help in treating thousands of abused animals.

Inform Others

There are many people who are unaware of animal abuse and neglect. Every day, this crime happens and there are any people that are unaware that this is actually taking place. It is very important for you to spread the word. You can do this by handing out pamphlets informing people of what's really happening and what they can do to stop it.

Report a Crime

Your involvement is very important. If you see an animal being abused or neglected, do something about it. Report to your local humane society, animal shelter, or animal control agency right away. Know who to call when reporting animal cruelty. Take note of important details, such as the type of animal cruelty, persons involved, the date it happened, and where it took place. These will really be of big help to the investigating officer.

Can You Really Get Your Cat to Emotionally Bond With You?

Like getting attached to human beings, you can also become emotionally attached to your pets, especially your cat. This is because cats express a lot of love for their owners. They like to rub themselves against and cuddle with their owners, making them feel loved and cared for.

However, you must assess if all these gestures of your cat actually denote emotional expression and if you should reciprocate it. You need to know if the cat is using you for food and shelter or if she really loves you for her own sake. Is it possible that your cat is actually emotionally attached to you and vise versa? Let us look into some factors to know the reality.

Our first encounter with cats is mostly presumed as camp fire since cats love warmth. We love cats for their loveliness; kittens move us the most and win our attention owing to their cuteness. Cats are also very playful and easy to get along with humans instead of running away from them like other animals.

What we need to see is that if cats do this out of their habit without having emotional streak behind it or if the case is other way round. Jeffrey Masson, the writer of the Nine Emotional Lives of Cats, says that cats can risk their lives to be their owner. Gemstones - A Guide to Their Properties

Gems or gemstones can be very expensive and relatively rare or they can be very common stones that are found in many different areas of the world. Gems, throughout history, have often been associated with specific properties and characteristics, often which can differ from culture to culture. Gemstones have been linked to creating good luck, helping with healing, financial gain or even having success in finding a soul mate. Of course very commonly gems are associated with zodiac signs and birthstones, each which also attributes certain characteristics of those born within that specific date range.

A very brief overview of some of the more common and some of the more unusual gemstones and their associated properties include:

Citrine - a lemony yellow to deeper golden topaz color, citrine is a gemstone that has been associated with many different positive attributes. It is thought to help to clear the mind and can enhance the wearer's ability to increase psychic powers is placed on the forehead. Worn around the neck or on the wrist it can increase positive energy, increase clarity of thoughts and increase joy in a person's life.
